PhD:
The interdisciplinary specialization is intended to meet the needs of students interested in combining courses and skills from two areas of specialization. At least one of the specialization areas must come from within the college. The second area may come from a department in another college at Northeastern University, such as Biology, Chemistry, or Engineering. Dissertation coadvisers are arranged for students who elect this option.
Students may begin to consider this option by discussing it with a faculty member in the college representing one of their areas of interest and by informing the PhD program director's office. The two areas of academic concentration are reflected in the course work, cumulative exams, and dissertation work undertaken. Students take the usual required courses. Specialization and General Elective Core courses are approved by the coadvisers. Students electing the interdisciplinary option must fulfill the same requirements as all other PhD candidates.
Master of Science:
Increasingly, scientific work is becoming interdisciplinary. In response to this trend, this interdisciplinary program has been set up which allows the student to focus on more than one area in biomedical science. The program is appropriate for both those entering as well as those currently employed in the field, including research technicians, clinical laboratory workers, science teachers and science administrators. For those currently employed, the program can enhance their performance in a present position or open up new employment opportunities. Graduates of the program will be well prepared to enter related PhD programs at the University.

Physician assistants are highly sought after members of the health care team who, working with physicians, provide diagnostic and therapeutic patient care. Pas practice medicine; they take medical histories, perform physical examinations, and order laboratory tests/studies. After diagnosing a problem, the PA develops and implements a treatment plan in consultation with the supervising physician. PAs can prescribe medication in all 50 states.
Patient education and counseling are important aspects of a PA's role. Pas advise patients on all aspects of health promotion and disease management. One distinctive feature of the PA profession is that PAs are dependent practitioners. PAs perform medical tasks and procedures with the supervision, but not necessarily in the presence, of a supervising physician. The PA scope of practice is authorized by state law and determined by the supervising physician.
Physician assistants are currently employed in a wide variety of settings: hospitals, health centers, health maintenance organizations, emergency rooms, college health services, physician's offices, nursing homes, and specialty clinics. PAs provide hospital care for surgical patients and assist in surgery. They provide care both in teaching institutions and in hospitals where there are no physician residents. Employment opportunities and the career outlook for physician assistants are excellent.
The Physician Assistant Program at Northeastern University was established in 1971. The program is a rigorous full-time, 24-month graduate program that offers students an opportunity to earn a Master of Science in Physician Assistant Studies. Since its founding, the Physician Assistant Program has been accredited by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant, Inc. and its predecessors. The U.S. News and World Report Graduate Rankings 2007 ranks Northeastern University's Physician Assistant Program #17 in the nation.
Graduates of the PA program take the PA National Certifying Examination (PANCE) after graduation. Certification is required for initial licensure / registration in all states. The first-time pass rates for the six most recent PA graduating classes is consistently above the national rate.

M.S. - The department offers thesis- and non-thesis based advanced degrees with concentrations in analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry, and in interdisciplinary fields such as polymers, materials, and bio-related chemistry. Ph.D. - This program is designed for students who have earned a bachelor's or a master's degree in chemistry and who wish to earn a doctorate in chemistry degree. The program of study includes some course work but the primary emphasis is on the completion of an original research project, its articulation in a well-written thesis and its subsequent defense before a panel of department faculty. This is a full-time degree program that typically takes 5-6 years to complete. Financial support (teaching assistantships or research assistantships) is normally provided for students admitted to this program throughout their period of study who are found to be making good progress toward their degree. Applicants for this degree-granting program are expected to have an earned B.A., B.S., or M.S. in chemistry or to have completed the equivalent coursework with an overall GPA of 3.0 or better from an accredited college or university.

The Department of Mathematics at Northeastern University is internationally known for its mathematical research and education. The graduate programs offer MS and PhD degrees in Mathematics, as well as an MS degree in Operations Research (in conjunction with the MIME department), and an MS degree in Applied Mathematics. Students with an MA or MS degree in mathematics should apply directly to the Ph.D. program. Students without an MA or MS in mathematics, who would like to enter the Ph.D. program, should instead apply to the MS program. Once students complete their MS degree requirements they may then apply to the Ph.D. program. The majority of students who obtain an MS degree in our program continue on into the Ph.D. program and obtain the Doctorate. It is the hope and expectation that students entering our program will continue the Ph.D. The programs are designed to provide students with a broad overview of current mathematics and a strong command of an area of specialization. Graduate students work with internationally recognized faculty in a range of research programs in both pure and applied mathematics. In addition, numerous seminars and colloquia at Northeastern and in the Boston area give students ample opportunity to learn about important recent advances in mathematics.

The Northeastern University Applied Behavior Analysis programs, which include certificate, Master of Science, and CAGS programs, are designed to develop teaching and intervention skills. Lectures are built around projects that can be completed either in the workplace or elsewhere in the community. These projects include functional analyses, preference assessments, intervention programs, and other procedures directly related to the practice of applied behavior analysis. Whenever possible, learning partnerships are formed between Northeastern University and students’ employers that incorporate work supervisors into the teaching processes. Workplace discussion groups and team projects link practice to studies.
The courses, which are both online and hybrid, fit contemporary lifestyles and make use of modern technology such as podcasts and Wimba classrooms. These features permit flexible schedules while creating increased communication with instructors and fellow students.
All Northeastern Applied Behavior Analysis programs contain the content students need to take the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) exam. Through our Learning Partnership Program, we also offer options through which students may fulfill the experience requirement necessary to take the exam.
