NU to Host Coastal Sustainability Briefing on Capitol Hill

Please join us on April 26th at 4:00 PM for a briefing on Capitol Hill hosted by Northeastern University, in partnership with Congressman Carlos Curbelo (R-FL), Congressman Seth Moulton (D-MA), and Florida International University (FIU), to discuss the threats facing coastal communities across the country and ways the federal government should consider investing in making these communities more resilient.

The briefing will feature Congressmen Curbelo and Moulton, Craig McLean, Acting Chief Scientist and Assistant Administrator for National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Oceanic and Atmospheric Research (OAR), as well as an expert panel of researchers from Northeastern and FIU. We hope you will join us to discuss the threats facing coastal communities, the importance of research on coastal threats, and best practices for building resilience in coastal communities.

Coastal communities across America are facing increasing threats related to sea-level rise, coastal ecosystem degradation, extreme weather events, and port security. More than half the world’s population lives near the coast, with a growing number residing in major coastal cities like Miami and Boston. In fact, coastal communities contribute half of global GDP. In order to ensure these vital communities remain sustainable and secure, we must acknowledge and respond to these imminent threats.

Congressmen Curbelo and Moulton recognize the important role that research and collaboration play in developing economically viable solutions that reduce these threats and protect our nation’s economy, infrastructure, and ecosystems. As members of the bipartisan Climate Solutions Caucus, they have shown exceptional leadership on issues facing coastal communities and will continue to support federal efforts that build resilience in every coastal community. Solving the challenges facing coastal communities will require continued collaboration with NOAA, federal and local stakeholders, and the expertise and resources of research institutions like Northeastern and FIU.

We hope that you will join us on April 26th for this briefing on coastal sustainability. Details are as follows:
