He received a B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Northeastern University in Boston and a Ph.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). In 1970 joined Jenike & Johanson where he has been active in research, consulting, and management of the company.

Besides being a founding member of AIChE’s Powder Technology Forum, Dr. Carson belongs to ASME, ASCE, and ASTM International, where he is chair of committee D18.24, “Characterization and Handling of Powders and Bulk Solids.”
The UK Institution of Mechanical Engineers conferred on him the honor of their ‘Solids Handling Award’ in recognition of his “Outstanding professional excellence in the technology”. This award is a measure of the unique international standing of his company, as both the original founders of Jenike & Johanson are amongst the comparatively few previous recipients of this prestigious award.
In addition, Dr. Carson is a Permanently Invited Guest to the European Federation of Chemical Engineering’s Working Party Mechanics of Particulate Solids. As such he is one of very few non-Europeans to be so honored.
