Our International Initiatives

For international students studying on our campus and for students who wish to study in other countries, Northeastern fosters deep connections with the world beyond Boston.

Northeastern’s global learning programs frequently go well beyond standard foreign study programs. International experiences may apply toward a student's academic requirements and are often supported with financial aid.  The Office of International Study Programs offers undergraduates opportunities to study at 31 colleges and universities in 19 countries, as well as to participate in research-based programs in the Caribbean, Costa Rica, and Vietnam. Undergraduates can also combine study and work in programs offered in Ireland, Belgium, England, the Dominican Republic, and Australia. The international office of our cooperative education program offers workplace positions in 33 countries. Northeastern students immerse themselves in the culture of their host country for these positions to gain a deeper understanding of the world.

The International Student & Scholar Institute (ISSI) offers services that foster awareness between cultures and help international students make the most of their Northeastern experiences. ISSI sponsors more than 12 weeks of activities throughout the year to help international students orient themselves to campus life, including a two-month cultural festival, and a full range of cultural programs. Equally important, the Institute helps students navigate immigration regulations and procedures. ISSI also offers a full range of professional advice on topics ranging from tax concerns for nonresidents to employment options for international scholars. ISSI’s 11 full-time staff members and 100 student programmers and volunteers help to serve the needs of 2,500 international students and scholars from 125 countries each year.
