Welcome to BIGER

We are aging from the moment we are born. Discoveries in the biological processes of aging, and the role of genes, as well as improvements in health care and disease treatment increase our life expectancy. Children born in 2007 are expected to live to 77.9 years of age. We are in the AGE of AGING.

Americans are not only living longer, they are living healthier. Research clearly supports the importance of good diet and regular exercise in maintaining health. Improved disease management has extended health, life expectancy and quality of life for older adults with chronic disease. We are AGING BETTER.

The health needs of older adults are best met by the interdisciplinary team. A patient- family centered team, made up of nurses, physicians, physical therapists, pharmacists, speech and language pathologists and audiologists, and other professionals, provides the best and most complete care for older adults.

Community support services are critically important to older adults. Many government agencies and volunteer groups provide services such as networking, exercise programs, education sessions and personal care for elders in their homes and in other settings. Community Health leaders provide valuable services to older adults.

The Bouve interdisciplinary faculty members have assembled this educational resource to advance the study of aging and the care of the older adults for interdisciplinary students, faculty and community leaders.
