Begin the Journey:
- Attend a global co-op information session, hosted by each college, to obtain more information about the program and the vast global co-op opportunities available to you.
- Meet with your Co-op Coordinator to explore your global co-op options.
- Complete the GEO Global Co-op Application and various pre-departure tasks outlined within prior to the start of your global co-op.
Explore Global Co-op Opportunities:
You have a myriad of options available to you to secure a global co-op position. You are encouraged to explore one or more of the following global co-op search approaches below:
The Global Employer Relations team works with your Co-op Coordinator, supplying global co-op leads and new co-op opportunities. Global co-op positions will be posted regularly and students are encouraged to visit NUcareers frequently for new global co-op postings. Positions offered through service providers may charge an added fee. You can obtain specific information about fees from you Co-op Coordinator.
The Career Development Office provides all Northeastern students access to GoingGlobal, a site that provides country-specific job opportunities and postings, along with career and employment information.
Your input is important to us and we want to hear from you. We strive to develop co-op positions that relate directly to your geographic and industry interests. You can obtain a Global Co-op Inquiry Request form from your Co-op Coordinator, who will send to Global Employer Relations on your behalf.
Generating leads and developing positions takes time. Upon receiving an inquiry request, the Global Employer Relations team will conduct outreach on your behalf. It is not always possible to develop a viable co-op position. You should allow ample time for Global Employer Relations to explore and cultivate leads. It is important for you to remain open and flexible.
Self Developed Co-ops:
Along with other search methods, you can develop your own global co-op through direct contacts, networking, LinkedIn, and “cold-calling”. You are encouraged to be pro-active in the global co-op search process. Your direct outreach to prospective employers and creating your own global co-op can have a big pay-offs down the road.
Once you secure a self-developed global co-op, your Co-op Coordinator must approve your co-op position. If approved by your Coordinator, you will need to complete a Global Co-op Vetting Form, which can be obtained by your Coordinator. Your Self-Developed Co-op must be vetted to ensure an optimal co-op experience with legitimate international employers.
Home Country Co-op for International Students:
If you are an international student, you are able to participate in a global co-op in your home country. You can self develop a global co-op through your home country network. Once you secure a home country co-op, your Co-op Coordinator must approve your co-op position. If approved by your Coordinator, you will need to complete a Global Co-op Vetting Form, which can be obtained by your Coordinator. Your home country co-op must be vetted to ensure an optimal co-op experience with legitimate international employers.
International students should be aware that along with working with your Co-op Coordinator, you are also required to meet with the International Student and Scholars Institute for co-op work permission.
Once you have secured a global co-op position or have connected with your Co-op Coordinator with an intent to participate in global co-op, you are advised to connect with the Global Experience Office and complete the GEO Global Co-op Application. This application provides students with resources for an international experience and serves as a checklist for steps leading up to departure from Northeastern University. If you have any questions regarding this process, you are encouraged to contact the Global Experience Office for more information.
