Items not accepted in the blue baskets include carbon paper, food, plastic (see below), waxed paper, styrofoam and corrugated cardboard (see below).
Corrugated cardboard
Corrugated cardboard can be identified by the wavy layer sandwiched in the middle of the cardboard. This product is not acceptable in the mixed paper blue baskets (see above). Place corrugated cardboard or flattened corrugated cardboard boxes in the hallway and your building superintendent will bring the cardboard to our recycling container. No packing material or pizza boxes will be accepted.
Plastic
Northeastern recycles #1 and #2 plastic containers. The number usually appears on the bottom of the containers with the recycling identifier. Also acceptable are used transparencies and redeemable plastic bottles
Bottles/glass
We accept glass containers, except broken glass, Pyrex or plate
dishes for recycling.
Cans
We accept aluminum and tin cans. The Food Services department recycles
over three tons of metal cans annually.
Laser toner cartridges
Faculty, staff and students can return used laser toner cartridges
to 22 Ell Building. Toner cartridges are then completely disassembled
and cleaned. Worn parts are replaced and new toner added.
Batteries
Northeastern was the first college/university in Massachusetts to
start recycling nickel cadmium (rechargeable) batteries. These batteries
are found in cell phones, laptop computers and other hand held electronics.
It is illegal to throw these batteries away. A drop-off bin is located
in the bookstore or call (617) 373-2735 for a pickup.
Composting and mulching
The cafeterias at Stetson and Speare Halls, as well as eating establishments in the Marino Center, collect prep food, coffee grinds, and other items to be composted. Also, yard waste is composted. Through the use of mulching mowers and mulching kits for older movers we have eliminated the need to bag most grass clipping.
Fluorescent lightbulbs
Northeastern's fluorescent lightbulbs are brought to ACB, Inc. in Haverhill, Mass. to be recycled.
Scrap metal
Since 1992, Northeastern has recycled metal from broken furniture and equipment.
Electronics
Electronics, such as computer processing units, are brought to ACB, Inc. in Haverhill, Mass. ACB, Inc. does not ship our electronics off shore.
Used carpeting
All used carpeting goes to the Dupont factory to be recycled into
automobile parts and other items. Please call (617) 373-2735 for
a pickup.
