Co-op/Academic Options

In order to provide the most flexible opportunities, Northeastern offers students the opportunity to complete one, two, or three co-ops—or none. (Although the core curriculum does require that all students undertake at least one form of experiential learning.)

Because of the co-op schedule, most students in the 5/3 option do not have summers off after their sophomore year. Instead, students switch back and forth between academic terms and co-op placements.

Regardless of which co-op option you choose, you’ll have formal and informal opportunities to reflect on and discuss your co-op experience, and the new perspectives it adds to what you’ve learned in the classroom.

5/3 option
In this track, students complete three six-month co-ops in five years.

5/2 option
In this track, students complete two six-month co-ops in five years.

4/1 option
Students who wish to experience co-op but complete their education in the traditional four years may take advantage of this option.

4/0 option
While most students do co-op, it is not required. Students who choose this option generally complete their degree in four years.
