Co-op in the College of Computer and Information Science

Northeastern’s integration of classroom study and real-world experience is ideally suited for the College of Computer and Information Science (CCIS). The Boston area’s wealth of high-tech research and development companies makes it the Silicon Valley of the East Coast. Many of the region’s technology firms employ Northeastern co-op students, offering unmatched opportunities to sample jobs in software development, systems and networks, business applications, or web development at Fortune 500 companies, entrepreneurial start-ups, and everything in between. Co-op opportunities also exist with companies and institutions that are deeply involved with computing applications.

If you choose to pursue one of CCIS’s dual majors with business, cognitive psychology, mathematics, physics, biology, multimedia studies, or music technology, you’ll find the landscape of possible co-ops even broader, including areas of leading-edge research in biotechnology and biomedicine.

CCIS also offers a unique co-op opportunity within the walls of its West Village home: serving on “the Crew.” Otherwise known as the volunteer systems group, members of the Crew help keep the college’s computing infrastructure running smoothly. In return, they get system privileges and a chance to learn firsthand about the politics and practical issues involved in providing computing services to a large academic community. Alumni say that some of the most professionally valuable entries on their résumés relate to their work experience with the Crew.

Our co-op faculty are integrated into the college, providing you with plenty of support for your job search, during co-op, and afterwards as you reflect on how the experience dovetailed with your classroom learning.  However, as is true of the co-op program throughout the University, you will need to compete for top co-op positions in computer and information science, just as you will for full-timetime positions after graduation.  That is part of the value of
co-op in preparing you to succeed as a professional in the real world.
