Official Opening, Waseda University Incubation Center

This event is an official tape-cutting ceremony to inaugurate the opening of the Waseda University Incubation Center (WIC). This event will be led by Dr. Katsuhiko Shirai, President of Waseda University and Dr. Takeru Ohe, Professor in the Waseda University Business School and Director of the Incubation Promotion Office. They Keynote speaker will be Mr. Sadahiro Sugita, and official from the Ministry of Economics and Trade Industry, METI.

The Waseda University Incubation Center (WIC) provides multi-faceted assistance to Waseda University faculty members and students intent on becoming international entrepreneurs. The goal of the Center is to create new, future-oriented venture businesses and to provide a comprehensive infrastructure made up of Waseda University academic resources and facilities. WIC will provide venture business support, management guidance, consulting, support for capital/fundraising, and support for promoting cooperation with external companies, affiliated companies, government departments and local administrations.

Presenter Information:

Dr. Katsuhiko Shirai,
President of Waseda University

Professor Shirai received his Ph.D. from Waseda University in 1973 and became a professor at the School of Science and Engineering at Waseda University in 1975. Professor Shirai is an expert in intelligence information technology. After playing major roles in the University, he was elected as the 15th President of Waseda University in 2002. Professor Shirai has also been a member of the Japan Council for Science and Technology, the Japan Central Council for Education, and the Japan University Accreditation Association.

Mr. Sadahiro Sugita,
Japanese Ministry of Economics and Trade Industry, METI

Mr. Sugita graduated from Hitotsubashi University in 1980 and joined the Ministry of International Trade and Industry (MITI). He served as the Director of the General Affairs Division of the Kansai Bureau, International Trade and Industry from 1994 to 1997, and as the Director of the Division of New Business Promotion, Industrial Policy Bureau of MITI from 1997 to 2002. After serveing in several important posts, such as the Director of Asia and Pacific Division of Trade Policy Bureau, and the Director of Trade Finance and Economic Cooperation Division, Trade and Economic Cooperation Bureau, Mr. Sugita was promoted to Councilor of the Intellectual Property Strategy Headquarters Cabinet Secretariat from 2005 to 2007. In 2007, Mr. Sugita became the Director General, Chugoku Bureau of Economy, Trade and Industry, serving until his current appointment with METI in 2008.

Takeru Ohe, Ph.D.,
Professor, Waseda University Business School and Director of the Waseda University Incubation Promotion Office

Dr. Ohe has vast experience as a consultant for companies competing in the high tech industries of the United States, Europe and Japan.  In 1982, he founded T. Ohe & Associates, Inc., in order to assist companies to build better businesses in Japan. Before beginning his consulting practice, he was General Manager of Dymo Japan, Inc., a large Japanese subsidiary of Dymo Industries. He currently sits on the boards of Cognex Japan K.K., a Boston-based machine vision manufacturer; and Syswave Ltd. a Tokyo-based semiconductor testing company. Dr. Ohe has also been consulting on corporate venturing activities with clients including Matsushita, NTT, Olympus, Seiko Epson, Taiheiyou Cement, Konica, LG, and IBM. 

At Waseda University, Dr. Ohe teaches courses in Corporate Venturing and Entrepreneurship. His research interests cover Experimental Management, Technology Evaluation Under Uncertainty, and Entrepreneurship Education. He has published numerous papers and articles, and is the author of several books: Entrepreneur Education will Change Kids (1999), Why Corporate Ventures Fail, (3rd edition, 2008), and Profit Design, (2002).

Dr. Ohe received his Ph.D. in Experimental Physics from the University of Maryland, and an MBA from the Columbia University Graduate School of Business.  Dr. Ohe has a BS degree in Physics from Nippon University in Tokyo.
