Social Entrepreneurship – Entrepreneurship in an Emerging Economy Context
Description:
This session will discuss the teaching of the rapidly growing field of “social entrepreneurship” in a collaborative field setting in an emerging economy. Earlier this year, Professor Shaughnessy led a unique program in which undergraduate students from a US university (NU) worked closely with students from disadvantaged communities in the townships surrounding Cape Town, South Africa, to assist local black and coloured entrepreneurs to start, build and expand “micro-enterprises”. This program also provided capital to fund the best of these micro-entrepreneurs.
NU collaborated with a local start-up college known as TSiBA, to develop and implement a new model for entrepreneurship education in emerging and frontier economies. The learning in this program is diverse and intense, as US students learn about extreme poverty, disease (HIV/AIDS) and the legacy of institutional racism, while also engaging in micro-enterprise development and financing, as hands-on business consultants. The program will be offered again in 2009.
