Slava Epstein

Professor of Biology, College of Science

Slava’s research is to uncover novel microbial life forms by inventing novel cultivation strategies. He is also an expert in the signaling and cooperative interactions between and within populations of microbial species that transform them into multifunctional units analogous to multicellular organisms. Slava is also an active entrepreneur, co-founder of Novobiotics, a privately held drug discovery company that is working on new antibiotics and cancer therapies with funding from the local angel investment community and the NSF and NIH. He olds a PhD in Microbial Ecology from the P.P.Shirshov Institute of Oceanology, Russian National Academy of Sciences, in Moscow, as well as an MSc in Marine Biology and a BS in Biology, both from Moscow State University, Russia. Slava has traveled the world in the hunt for unique microorganisms that can serve as the basis for the next generation of medical therapies.
