Prospective students who are interested in earning up to 12 semester hours of graduate credit prior to applying to a degree program may apply as Special students. Special students must apply directly to the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences and include an application, application fee, personal statement, writing sample, and official transcripts confirming an earned bachelor’s degree.

Prospective Special students apply to the Graduate School. Once your application file is complete, the Graduate School will communicate with you via email and your file will be forwarded to the department committee. The final admissions decisions are made by the Graduate School upon recommendation of the department committee.

- Personal Statement
The personal statement is a brief description of your background, your interests, and your reasons for wanting to enroll in English graduate classes. The personal statement should not exceed two pages.
- Transcripts from all institutions attended
Unofficial transcripts should be uploaded to the Apply Yourself system as part of your application.
- Writing Samples
Writing samples should be academically based and 10-20 pages in length. Creative writing or professional samples may accompany your academic sample, but should not serve as a substitute for it.
