Grad Student Advisors
What are the requirements for the MA and PhD graduate programs?
Specific program requirements can be found in the graduate booklet, and general graduate policies can be found in the General Regulations booklet, both published by the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences.
When does registration begin? When does the add/drop period end?
For important registration dates, please review the academic calendar, available on the Registrar’s website.
Do courses that fulfill Women’s Studies and Cinema Studies certificate requirements count toward the degree?
Yes. All English graduate courses count toward the degree, as long as they fulfill a requirement or the student has room for an elective. Graduate courses taken outside the department may count as electives.
Can my advisee take a graduate course outside the department?
Courses taken outside the department may count as electives. The student should check with the Graduate Coordinator and/or his or her advisor before registering for such a course.
Whom should my advisee contact for TA information?
General questions should go to the Graduate Programs Assistant (m.daigle@neu.edu). Questions about TA summer preparation and other workshops should go to Professor Lerner(n.lerner@neu.edu), but TAs should hang onto these questions until they’ve received their TA packets in June/July.
How does a student transfer credit?
Information about transferring credit can be found on the Transfer Credit Policy webpage.
Where can I find information about graduate exams?
- Graduate examination web page
- English Program Dissertation Procedures (PDF). The approved prospectus must be submitted to the Graduate Studies Committee, via the Graduate Office. The prospectus should be signed by all committee members or submitted with e-mail approval from all committee members.
- Thesis, Dissertation Guide on the CSSH website
How can my advisee register for a Directed Study?
Please review pg. 11 of the English graduate booklet. Forms for Directed/Independent Study registration can be found on the Directed Study, Master’s Thesis, & Consortium Courses webpage.
My advisee is in the MA program and would like to apply to the PhD program. What is the internal application process?
An internal application form and online application must be completed by students who are currently enrolled in a degree program and who are applying for a different degree program within the same department (i.e. MA program to PhD program or Special student to degree program). The form and a link the ApplyYourself online application system can be found at http://www.northeastern.edu/casgraduate/current_students/forms/.
Note: If a student commences with a terminal MA before matriculating into the PhD program (via internal application or otherwise), the student is required to complete PhD requirements as a student entering with an MA. The GSC is drafting language for the 2012-13 graduate booklet, which will address the requirements for students who choose not commence with a terminal MA degree before matriculating into the PhD program from the MA program. (updated 11/15/11)
Are there FAQ pages for students?
Yes. FAQ pages for new students, current students, and prospective students can be found at http://www.northeastern.edu/english/graduate/faqs/.
