Welcome to the English Department

We offer Bachelor’s, Master’s, and doctoral degrees. Our courses span the range of American and English literature and writing studies, with particular expertise in American and transatlantic literatures (early and contemporary), writing studies, and digital humanities.  Our faculty are also involved in research and teaching in African-American Studies, Jewish Studies, Linguistics, and Women’s, Gender, and Sexuality Studies.

Akbari, Cordell Receive Teaching Awards

  Two English department faculty members are recipients of the first CSSH Outstanding Teaching Awards.  Assistant Professor Ryan Cordell received the Outstanding Teaching Award for tenured- and tenure track faculty; part-time Lecturer Tom Akbari received the Outstanding Teaching Award for part-time instruction.  They were recognized at the CSSH Faculty celebration on April 2nd.

Featherman Publishes Book on Iranian Elections

Lecturer Chris Featherman has published Discourses of Ideology and Identity: Social Media and the Iranian Election Protests (Routledge, 2015), which explores the ways that social movement ideologies and identities are discursively constructed in new and old media, through a case study of the 2009 Iranian presidential election protests.

Dillon, McGrath To Be Honored at Academic Honors Convocation

Two members of the department who will be honored at Northeastern University’s Fifth Annual Academic Honors Convocation on April 23, 2015. Professor Elizabeth Maddock Dillon is the 2015 Recipient of the University Excellence in Research and Creativity Award, and doctoral candidate Jim McGrath is the 2015 Recipient of the University Graduate Community Service Award. Aljoe receives JDOAII Distinguished Faculty Award

Associate Professor Nicole Aljoe is the 2015 recipient of the John D. O’Bryant African-American Institute Distinguished Faculty Award.  According to the Director of the Institute, Dr. Richard L. Nicole N. Aljoe

Associate Professor

Professor Nicole N. Aljoe is the department's most recently tenured associate professor. Her fields of specialization are eighteenth- and nineteenth-century Black Atlantic Literature, the Slave Narrative, Postcolonial Studies, and eighteenth-century British Novel.

Emily Artiano

Doctoral Candidate

Emily Artiano joined Northeastern University's doctoral program in English in Fall 2008 after completing her Bachelor of Arts degree at University of California, Davis. She was recently awarded a 2014-2015 Northeastern University Humanities Center Fellowship and is currently completing a dissertation titled “Translingual Bodies and the Eighteenth- and Nineteenth-Century Atlantic."
