The Parent Support Community
Parents of Northeastern students past and present know what a Northeastern education can mean in a young person's life. As the Empower campaign gathers momentum, parents’ philanthropic support for Northeastern will also grow—and become increasingly influential. Such gifts touch the lives of current and future students by transforming their academic, athletic, cultural, and professional experiences.
Since 2010, non-alumni parents have contributed nearly $5 million for a wide variety of needs, including academic-program support, club sports, unpaid co-ops within government agencies and at nonprofit organizations, and support of research and international experiential learning. Giving opportunities include:
Scholarships are a top priority in the Empower campaign, essential for bringing the most qualified and deserving students to Northeastern.
Parents may direct their gift toward a specific university need that closely matches their interests. For example, Pieter and Yvette Eenkema van Dijk, PNT’14, endowed a professional coaching position for the Sailing Club in December 2012 with a gift of $750,000. They are the first non-alumni parents to establish an endowment fund at Northeastern.
Parents can jumpstart or help sustain a host of innovative student and faculty-led programs, in any of nine schools and colleges.

The Parents Fund
The Parents Fund is an annual fund, meaning that contributions are spent in the year they are received and that their purpose is unrestricted. Such gifts are directed by university leaders to areas of greatest need and importance. However, parents may choose to direct their Parent Fund gift to their child's academic program, sports team, or other specific purpose that is especially meaningful to them.
Gifts to the Parents Fund support vital aspects of the undergraduate program, including scholarships, academic programmatic innovations, co-op, cultural activities, and residential life. Together, these facets of a Northeastern education make the student experience distinctive and deeply enriching.
The Parents Leadership Council
The Parents Leadership Council (PLC) advances Northeastern’s mission by providing volunteer leadership, by offering perspectives on issues relating to students, higher education, and career development, and by supporting the university through philanthropy. The PLC also enhances the academic, cultural, and social experiences of undergraduates through individual and collective outreach, through the identification of new cooperative-education opportunities, and through creative fundraising initiatives.
Comprising approximately 20 parent leaders, the PLC represents diverse graduating classes, colleges and schools at Northeastern, and regions of the United States and the world. PLC members assist the university by embracing the following responsibilities:
- To serve the university and parents of current students by facilitating communication and increasing parental engagement;
- To represent Northeastern on campus and in their home regions by promoting participation among other parents, alumni, and friends; and
- To help the university build a solid foundation of parent philanthropy through fundraising and donor stewardship.
The PLC welcomes new members. If you are interested in serving on the council, please write to firstname.lastname@example.org.
Parents and Family Weekend
The Parent Engagement and Giving Team held a session on “How to Make the Most of YOUR Northeastern Experience,” as parents. Their presentation’s one-page resource lists many of the websites parents should visit frequently to see what’s going on here on campus, as well as in the Boston neighborhoods. Find out what is available to parents on and off campus here.
Other Volunteer Opportunities
In addition to providing crucial financial support, all parents have many opportunities to become engaged with Northeastern. For example, they may:
- Sponsor a co-op opportunity at their place of business;
- Accept an invitation to speak at one of our classes, or serve on a panel of experts;
- Provide a service or product that enhances an academic or athletic program;
- Host a send-off party or parent-engagement reception; or
- Join the Parents Leadership Council
We need your help as we endeavor to empower all talented young students and prepare them for a lifetime of achievement and fulfillment. Please consider how your time, talents, and treasure might align with our mission, and share your ideas.
