Field Study: Dialogues of Civilization Study Trip to Iceland

Northeastern University Dialogues of Civilization Study Trip to Iceland

May 19 – June 20, 2008

Mal Hill and Dan Douglass led a 4-week study trip to Iceland for 19 students. The students completed two courses as part of Northeastern’s summer-term program. We were supported by the university’s Dialogues of Civilization program, which enables students to have an international learning experience supervised by NU faculty. We studied active and historic volcanic and glacial processes and were able to think about how the Icelandic people have accommodated themselves to living in this challenging environment over time. We stayed 3 nights at the Laugarvegur campground in Reykjavik at both the beginning; 5 nights at Holar College University; 3 nights at the Bjarg campground at Myvatn; one night at the campground in Egilsstaðir; 6 nights at a hostel in Hofn; 3 nights at the Skaftafell National Park campground; 3 nights at the Skogar campground; 2 nights at the campground in Landmannalaugar, and finished up with 2 nights back at the campground in Reykjavik.
