A learning community is small cohort of students who enroll in a cluster of two or more courses. Because the courses are thematically linked, students have the opportunity to work with two or more faculty members to gain a deeper and more meaningful understanding of the material. Course clusters can focus on a profession, major, or area of interest, and are often comprised of courses that satisfy College core requirements.
Learning communities are a way to bring a small college atmosphere to a large research university and encourage meaningful and lasting relationships between students and faculty. In creating a sense of community, learning communities can help ease the transition from high school to college. In addition, learning communities offer a way for students to explore common areas of interest with other students, the chance for a close connection to faculty, and the opportunity for collaborative learning.
