Online Advising Receives Award

December 2006

Students and parents increasingly turn to the Web to conduct the business of being a Northeastern University student. From submitting an application to selecting housing, students and parents expect to be able to complete tasks online. To increase the number of services online, the EdTech Center is partnering with College advisors on three major advising programs: freshman online advising, pre-med advising, and a university-wide early warning advising system funded by the Davis Educational Foundation.

Online Advising for Incoming Freshmen is an advising tutorial that allows students to learn about and register for courses during the summer prior to entering Northeastern. Launched by the College of Arts & Sciences, the program was developed by Mary Mello, Jan Swindlehurst, Kim Irimiter, Gail Stubbs and Ed Tam of CAS and Katelynn O’Brien, Seth Merriam and Cathy McCarron of EdTech. The design is modeled after the MBTA public transportation system. Students navigate different transit lines, stopping along the way to learn about different aspects of their first academic year at Northeastern. The site was awarded a 2006 Outstanding Advising Technology Innovation Award by The National ACademic ADvising Association (NACADA). This summer online advising programs were developed for the Bouve College of Health Sciences and the College of Business Administration. EdTech is currently working with the College of Criminal Justice to build online advising programs.

Updates to the Pre-Med Advising program and a profile of the Davis Early Warning System will be featured in the spring 2007 newsletter.
