“Good professor. Slightly obsessed with Apple technology”

As I received the email this morning about TRACE reports being ready and immediately proceeded to log on to view them, 2 thoughts came through my brain. I wondered if the students noticed my use of iPad in the classroom and whether incentives worked to generate a good response rate from them. Going through the comments, it’s clear that students do notice when we use the technology in the ...

Stay Connected

Student interaction has helped me with iPad/classroom integration.  With tech-savvy students bringing iPads to class to take notes and exploit its capabilities, interaction has been part of the key to success.  Students are on a limited budget, and as a result, have tried various apps and accessories.

One area where I received student assistance was identifying the best stylus for note...

Reflections app

I was able to test out the new Reflections app that allows users to screen mirror the iPad on their computer screen. In my case I connected the macbook pro to the LCD output in the classroom and was able to screen mirror and present the entire lecture via my iPad without being attached to the computer station. The app worked really well and was relatively easy to use. Once again, I found severa...

Spring update

I have been teaching an elective course this semester called “Leadership and Advocacy in Health Care”, and while I have not been using any special apps, the iPad allows me to stay green by viewing all readings on it as we have our weekly discussions. The students in the course blog using WordPress and I find the app and viewing of posts on the web site somewhat frustrating. I wish I...

Spring Update

As it turns out, I am not teaching any classes this semester. Instead, I am offering a series of academic workshops to students in the Ujima Scholars program. Consequently, I am having to re-think how I incorporate the iPad into my work for the time being. My initial project was based around elements of HipHop culture. That project will continue in its full form in the Fall 2012 semester, when ...

Ergonomic evals

The students and I completed 20 on site work station evaluations. Each employee was evaluated for proper seating and positioning at their work station, as well as identifying employees at risks for repetitive stress injuries. Students worked in pairs, pre and post images of the work-site were taken. The students used the application Explain Everything to draw the corrections on the first image....

Pod casting almost complete

The pod casts are going very well. The students have 9 of the 10 educational sessions complete. Each movie is around 10 minutes. The recording has been smooth and takes each student about 60 minutes, to record, review and edit as needed. The students find the best feature is that each slide is recorded individually, so if a correction is needed they only need to re-record that slide. The feedba...

Getting acquainted with the ins and outs of Explain Everything

I have to admit I love this application once I figured out the quirks.

If you would like to create a podcast from a power-point presentation it is possible to download the file directly from drop box (another app I love) but in some cases the alignment goes askew. Best solution so far is to save the power-point as a PNG file and then upload the file of images to the presentation.

Department wide implementation

After 6 months of using my iPad for teaching in the classroom and at my practice site, and with much support from the EdTech center, I am very excited about the upcoming department-wide iPad implementation. We are fortunate to have a Department Chair, who supports innovative teaching and who identified funds to purchase an iPad for each faculty member. Our faculty have identified a variety of u...
