The EdTech Buzz
Innovative teaching andlearning projects

Mon, April 9 2012, 8:00 - 5:00
Northeastern University, Raytheon Amphitheater
Thanks for joining us for Northeastern's sixth annual Teaching with Technology mini-conference on Monday, April 9, from 8:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. This year's theme was Mobile Learning.
Participants saw how fellow Northeastern faculty are using technology in their courses. Participants also attended breakout sessions on a range of technology related to effective teaching strategies.
The day started with a vendor showcase, which lasted all day, and included a noontime keynote address and afternoon breakout sessions on a range of topics. The event was hosted by staff from the Educational Technology Center, University Libraries, our Teaching Center, and Information Services. Over 130 participants from Northeastern as well as faculty and educational technology professionals from area universities attended.
This year's keynote presentation:
Disrupting Class: Mobile Technologies, Affinity-Schools, and You
Cathleen Norris, Regents Professor, University of North Texas
Elliot Soloway, Arthur F. Thurnau Professor, University of Michigan
Listen to the webcast of the keynote presentation
Will the University of Phoenix – or worse, Kaplan University – dominate higher education? K-12? Will online technologies make a hash of your retirement plans? No. No. No. The disruptive predictions of C. Christensen, while well-researched, have failed to take into account mobile technologies and their affordances. No surprise, mobile technologies have come on the scene after the bulk of CC’s research was done. But fear not, a disruption in schooling is indeed coming. But that disruption will hit K-12 first (phew!). In our presentation, we will describe the coming of “affinity schools” – learn-by-doing schools organized around special interests – students’ special interests. We will discuss how the shift from a focus on the cognitive aspects of learning to the social aspects of learning, taking place right now, is being supported by mobile technologies - and the implications of that shift for the creation of affinity schools.

Presenters
Cathleen Norris is a Regents Professor in the College of Information, Department of Learning Technologies at the University of North Texas. Cathie’s 14 years in K-12 classrooms –receiving Dallas’ Golden Apple Award along the way – has shaped her university research agenda: Cathie is focused on using mobile technologies to support teachers in enacting an active, learn-by-doing, pedagogy. Cathie has been President of the International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), the leading international organization for technology-minded educators, and the President of the National Educational Computing Association (NECA), the association that organized NECC, the premier conference on technology in K-12. Cathie is co-founder of GoKnow, Inc., a Dallas-based company that supports K-12 in using mobile learning devices.
Elliot Soloway is an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor in the Dept of Computer Science & Engineering, College of Engineering, with appointments in the School of Education and School of Information, University of Michigan. For the past 10 years, Elliot’s research has been guided by the vision that mobile, handheld – and very low-cost – networked devices are the only way to truly achieve universal 1:1 in schools – all across the globe. In 2001, the UMich undergraduates selected him to receive the “Golden Apple Award” as the Outstanding Teacher of the Year. In 2004 and in 2011, the EECS College of Engineering HKN Honor Society awarded Elliot the “Distinguished Teacher of the Year Award.” Elliot is a co-founder of GoKnow, Inc. And, he is currently Chair and Grand Poobah of ISTE’s Special Interest Group on Mobile Learning (SIGML).
