From Pilot to Program: Hybrid Courses at Northeastern University

This presentation by EdTech director Alicia Russell and Tiane Donahue, Assistant Professor of English at the U of Maine, Farmington was delivered at the Syllabus conference in Boston in fall 2002. Russell and Donahue describe how Northeastern University's hybrid writing program redesigned a required upper level writing course from traditional to hybrid delivery, developed a pilot program, received significant private grant support to train 20 instructors, and is continuing to grow. The presenters explained that the Educational Technology Center is working with faculty to move the training program from in-person to online, expand beyond the English Department, and evaluate the learning outcomes and Drop/Failure/Withdrawal rate.

The presenters also wrote an an article which describes the hybrid writing program that transformed the Middler Year Writing Requirement and outlines the expansion of hybrid education at the university.
