37 Billion Mile Data Challenge, March 10-April 9

Each year cars and trucks in Massachusetts drive 37 billion miles, although the amount of driving varies widely depending on the community and household.

Now the Metropolitan Area Planning Council and Massachusetts Department of Transportation have released a dataset called the Massachusetts Vehicle Census and launched a data challenge seeking “visualizations, analysis, maps, animations, infographics, interactive web tools, games, and any other data-driven medium that reveals patterns and helps inform action.”

The dataset contains  anonymized information about the age, model, estimated mileage, fuel efficiency, and zip code of passenger and commercial vehicles registered in the state from 2008 to 2011 as well as a spatial dataset of 250 meter grid cells with statistics on vehicles per household, mileage per vehicle, and greenhouse gas emissions.

People can compete individually and in teams.  For more information and to sign up, go to http://www.37billionmilechallenge.org/
