How Do You Like Your Carbon? I’ll Take Mine Blue

March 21 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm

How do you like your carbon? I’ll take mine blue

Presented by: Dr. Phil Colarusso, Marine Biologist, US Environmental Protection Agency Climate change is the preeminent environmental issue of our generation.  Sea level rise, warming water temperatures and ocean acidification are just some of the consequences of elevated CO2 concentrations in our atmosphere.  Seagrasses, salt marshes and mangroves are aquatic habitats that absorb and store large quantities of carbon, providing important buffers to climate change.  Collectively, these habitats are commonly referred to as “blue carbon”, due to their aquatic nature.  This talk will discuss current sampling quantifying carbon storage in eelgrass in New England, including a site in Nahant and what steps the average citizen can take to conserve this important habitat.
