Be mindful when registering for courses and make sure that you meet all the prerequisite requirements before registering for a class. Course prerequisites are available here. If you need help using the course search system, there is an online help page here.
The registration system will block students from registering for a course that is restricted to specific majors, colleges, or class year. If you try to register for a course that is restricted, you will receive an error message. A complete list of error messages is available here. The only way for you to register for these courses is to go to the department or person that has imposed the restriction. Nearly every restriction has been set by the department that is offering the course. For example, if a student is trying to register for a restricted history class, he or she must contact the Department of History. The academic advisors in the Dean’s Office will not be able to assist students in overriding the restriction.
The steps below help guide you in determining what courses to register for in an upcoming term. You should set aside an hour or more for course registration to give yourself ample opportunity to understand the options and make informed decisions.
Download and print the following tools. (It’s very helpful to either print them out to take notes or open each item in a different browser tab. To open a new tab in Internet Explorer or Firefox on a PC, press the “Ctrl” and the “T” keys simultaneously. For Safari or Firefox on the Mac, press the Command key [looks like a clover] and the “T” key simultaneously.)
MyPaws Degree Audit
Found on MyNEU. Click on the “Self-Service” tab and then click on the Degree Audit link. Run an audit for the desired major.

There is a lot of information to absorb in the audit, so take time in reading it. First, identify the requirements which are not complete. These sections are notated by a ” – ” in the left margin, as shown here for the Social Science Level 1 requirement:
Each of the courses in this list is eligible to complete the requirement. Click on any course number to get a course description. Please pay careful attention to the prerequisites!
Even if the registration system doesn’t block the course, professors or departments may remove students from the class or ask them to leave during the first week of classes if they do not meet the required prerequisites.
When looking at the course offerings pages, there are a few important bits of information.
The most important bit of information is the CRN or Course Registry Number. It is a five-digit number that is unique to this class at this specific time with that professor. The CRN immediately follows the title of the course. This is the number needed to type into the registration system to register for the class.
Open and Closed Sections
At the bottom right area of the example is the remaining seats listing. This is up-to-date as of the time the page loaded. If there are 0 remaining seats in a course, this almost always means the course really is closed and neither the department nor the professor can sign students into the course.
Compare the remaining requirements from your degree audit to the course offerings in the upcoming terms.
When it comes time to register, log into MyNEU, click the “Self-Service” tab, and then on “Course Registration”. When the new window opens, choose the correct term for registration, making sure to choose the option for Undergraduate Semesters. Add in the CRNs of the courses from your list and click Submit Changes. If you get any errors, consult this list of registration errors and contact the appropriate department or person.
