Title: Society & Health Course Number: SOCL1120/1121 CRN:36637 Description: Designed to provide undergraduate students with an opportunity to apply
social scientific perspectives to the study of health, illness and
health care. Offers students an opportunity to develop critical
assessment skills while exploring a range of explanations for why,
despite having the most expensive health-care system, the United States
ranks comparatively low in life expectancy and health and well being
outcomes. Explores the multiple ways that societal factors interplay
with health and health disparities. Begins with macro-level social
determinants such race, class, and gender, and explores the ways these
factors interplay with health and health care. Studies neighborhoods and
social networks in relation to health. Introduces students to basic
sociological concepts relevant for the study of health and health care,
such as social construction and medicalization. Through lecture,
case-based learning and small group workshops, students have an
opportunity to develop an appreciation for a broad-based exploration of
the ways that our social environment shapes health in contemporary U.S.
society. Coreq. SOCL 1121. Cores:N/A
