Collections

Services

  • Online, quick  e-mail delivery through interlibrary loan of requested journal articles for which there is not already online access. Articles are sent to you by email in about 1 to 3 days of request.
  • Subject librarians to assist faculty and students by telephone or email with library research or class assignment needs.
  • Subject tailored library research guides
  • Subject librarians are available to help identify sources to add to curricular assignments and consider titles you recommend for the collection
  • Reference services (telephone, 24/7 online chat, e-mail, texting)

Collections

  • A large print and media collection of approximately one million volumes
  • An U.S. Government Documents Depository Collection of a few hundred thousand documents, mostly online.
  • The University Libraries are a member of the Boston Library Consortium, a group of local and regional academic libraries with a collective collection of over 35 million volumes.  With a BLC Card, one may borrow directly from member institutions.
  • The library does not generally purchase textbooks.  However, faculty are invited to place personal copies of textbooks used in courses on reserve for their students to use on-site.

JULY 2013 UPGRADES

A New Catalog and More

The impact of the Internet and the electronic research environment has been widespread in higher education, and certainly libraries are no exception. Previous library management systems and catalogs were designed before the existence of online resources such as e-journals, e-books, and digital archival collections, and they are no longer adequate to handle new formats and new modes of delivery of information.

As a result, the University Libraries are right now in the process of transitioning away from a 20-year-old legacy system called Millennium and implementing Alma, a new library management system, and its corresponding public catalog search and discovery tool. When they come online in July, these new systems will allow better search and discovery results for library users, and more efficient addition and processing of collections and resources for the library. As an early adopter of Alma, Northeastern joins the ranks of other major research libraries including Princeton, Purdue, Boston College, Boston University, and more universities in the US and worldwide.

The benefits of moving to Alma are numerous, but there are a number of changes to be expected from such a major transition. These include a new way of searching the library catalog and other resources, a shift in interlibrary loan services, and some other anticipated changes detailed below. For each of the major changes, and throughout this process, the library is committed to providing full support for our users.

A New NUCat

The most visible change following from this transition is that the legacy library catalog, NUCat, will be replaced with a more powerful, efficient, and comprehensive search. The new search system will include all of the collections indexed by NUCat, with the option to search more, including journal articles and digital materials. Replacing NExpress

As of April 12, 2013, the NExpress interlibrary loan services are no longer available for borrowing materials from other libraries. The library is instead offering broad access and fast delivery through our other interlibrary loan services, WorldCat Local and ILLiad. Read more about interlibrary loan changes.

A New Login System

In partnership with campus Information Services, the library is putting in place a new authentication system for off-campus access to online library resources. This change should not result in any major disruptions but instead make signing in easier for users. Links and bookmarks to library resources may need to be updated, however.
