Three Seas students study together for an academic year, beginning with the spring semester in Nahant, Massachusetts, at Northeastern University’s Marine Science Center. A variety of pristine intertidal and subtidal communities are well-suited to help provide a strong foundation in marine biology and ecology.

Following the summer break, during which students are encouraged to take advantage of co-op, internship, and academic course opportunities in the marine sciences, the fall semester includes time split between the University of Washington’s Friday Harbor Laboratories on San Juan Island, Washington, where rocky intertidal, subtidal kelp forest, and soft-sediment habitats provide a varied seascape for study, and the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Bocas del Toro, located on the Caribbean Sea, offering coral reef ecology, ocean and coastal processes, and tropical terrestrial ecology courses, among others, using Panama’s diverse tropical ecosystem and unique geographical location as both classroom and laboratory.
