Cooperative education (Co-op) gives students the opportunity to integrate what they have learned in the classroom with real-world experience. For each co-op, students work full-time in a professional position for six months, either domestically or internationally. By participating in varied co-op positions, students gain practical knowledge about their possible career choices, and build skills that they can apply to their future careers.

Before participating, students take a one-credit course in which they are walked through the entire process, from developing a professional resume and interviewing skills, to knowing what to expect once they have landed a job. Co-op advisors help students navigate the application process, while co-op and faculty advisors help students as they consider different professional opportunities.

While most students apply to positions that are available through Northeastern’s extensive database of existing co-op positions, students are also able to develop their own co-op positions. Recently students have developed a number of interesting co-ops in linguistics, for example, working as a Research Assistant at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in the Netherlands, working as a speech therapist assistant with children in Uganda, and working with children on the Autism Spectrum on language development in Colorado. While this requires a greater time investment on the part of the student, it can allow students to pursue experiences that are very specific to their career goals.

Students in the Linguistics program have completed co-ops in a variety of careers including research, education, journalism, marketing, and more. A representative list of recent co-ops can be found below.
