November 13-14, 2014, Basrah, Iraq
The University of Basrah Marine Science Centre in cooperation with the Northeastern University Marine Science Center, Nahant, Massachusetts, USA, and the geology faculty, Technische Universitaet Bergakademie Freiberg, Saxony, Germany is pleased to announce the International Conference, “Impact of Climate Change on the Marine Environment of Arid Regions.” The conference will be held 26-28, November 2013 at the University of Basrah, Basrah, Iraq.
The conference will feature an international panel of experts and participants who will learn from other countries’ experiences, with the goal of identifying challenges, obstacles and solutions for integrating sustainable development principles into planning in southern Iraq.
Iraq is facing a unique set of environmental challenges as one of the Arab region’s most vulnerable countries to climate change. Changing weather patterns in recent years, have brought higher frequency and intensity of extreme weather events, rising environmental degradation throughout the country, and more frequent and severe dust storms, droughts, and extreme high temperatures.
Initiatives to increase our understanding of how environmental change is likely to impact the environmental, political, and socio-economic well being of Iraq is imperative.
Although this is the first conference of its kind, Iraq is party to a number of international conventions on the natural environment, including: the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) (2009), the Kyoto Protocol (2009), the Vienna Convention for the Protection of the Ozone Layer (2007), the Montreal Protocol (2007) and the Biodiversity Convention (2009).
