No!! Because the NUpath requirements are competency based and not course based, there no level restrictions or course semester hour restrictions. You can fulfill NUpath requirements with course from 1000 level through 5000 level, and from 1 SH to 4 SH. This provides flexibility to you as a learner to not only choose the context in which you experience learning the competency, but to acquire that competency when it makes sense along your own personal academic path. Being competency based also ensures the rigor of meeting the NUpath requirements because the learning goals set the achievement level – not course content or level.

There are several ways to find out. 1) You can run report through the Dashboard {hyperlink Dashboard} tool. If you need further instructions, then check out the tutorial under Resources {hyperlink}. 2) You can run a self-service audit. 3) You can find out in the University Catalog. [NOTE: some majors do not yet have this available and some do.] Still in Doubt? Check with your academic advisor.

Yes!! Many NUpath requirements are met by your major requirements either inside or outside your major department. Because the NUpath requirements are competency based and not course based, this provides flexibility to you as a learner to choose the context in which you experience learning the competency. Being competency based also ensures the rigor of meeting the NUpath requirements because the learning goals set the achievement level – not course content or level.

Analyzing and Using Data, for example, can be learned in the context of fields as diverse as electrical engineering, or psychology, or international business, or music industry. So once you find out which NUpath requirements are met by your major requirements, be sure to check out your minor or concentration requirements, too. Then pick something you are interested in exploring in order to meet your remaining NUpath requirements!

Because the NUpath requirements are competency based and not course based, a single course can count for up to two of the following requirements:

  • Natural and Designed World,
  • Creative Expression and Innovation,
  • Interpreting Culture,
  • Formal and Quantitative Reasoning,
  • Societies and Institutions,
  • Analyzing and Using Data,
  • Differences and Diversity, and
  • Ethical Reasoning

The 3 additional requirements (Writing Intensive in the Major, Capstone, and Experiential) are not limited. So, for example, a course may have 2 out of the first list (like Differences and Diversity and Societies and Institutions), and ALSO be writing intensive and experiential.

Check out the Course Dashboard! The Dashboard is a list of all courses that are approved for NUpath attributes. You can filter the list by College, by Subject Code (course prefix), and/or by desired NUpath attribute or multiple attributes. You can also find out through your self-service audit or by the course catalog description

Yes. You can meet up to 5 of the NUpath requirements through any combination of transferred credits and/or test-based credits such as AP or IB. There are three exceptions to this rule: 1) you cannot transfer credit for Capstone, 2) you cannot transfer credit for Integrating Knowledge and Skills through Experience, and 3) you cannot transfer credit for Writing Intensive in the major. Check out the Transfer Database for specific attributes per course or test.
