MLK Day of Service

"Make it a day ON! Not a day off."
-Corporation for National Service

Service was at the heart of Dr. King’s philosophy.
He said, “Everybody can be great because everybody can serve,” and urged Americans to take action to improve people’s lives. In recognition of that spirit, Congress in 1994 passed the King Holiday and Service Act. Since then, millions of Americans have been involved in MLK Day of Service projects across the country.

2003 Celebration Update!
NU's Center of Community Service coordinated
A Day of Service on the Martin Luther King Jr. Holiday
January 20, 2003!

In honor of Dr. King, Northeastern students, faculty, staff and members of the Massachusetts Promise Fellowship AmeriCorps program participated in projects at Morville House, Shelburne Community Center, the Haitian Multi-Service Center, and the Old Colony Housing Development. Making it "a Day on, Not a Day Off" over 100 volunteers spent the day painting, interacting with senior citizens or conducting a community survey.

MLK Day of Service 2001

With support from the Corporation of National Service, Northeastern University implemented its second annual MLK Day of Service on January 15, 2001. On this day volunteers from Northeastern and the surrounding community came together to give service to others. The day of service consisted of teams of volunteers painting and renovating the resource room at Catholic Charities Haitian Multi-Service Center and serving lunch to women and children at Rosie's Place through their meal services program.

2000 MLK Day of Service Celebration

On January 17, 2000, over 100 community residents, youth and college students, gathered at the John D. O'Bryant African American Institute at Northeastern University to reflect on the teachings of Martin Luther King Jr. as they packaged and delivered personal care items to four Boston homeless shelters. As part of Northeastern's first MLK Day of Service volunteers from Northeastern University, Mo Vaughn Youth Development Program, First Congregational Church of Hamilton, Asah Family Life Enrichment Center of Roxbury and Mission Safe Youth Program celebrated the holiday by making it "a Day On, Not a Day Off."

MLK Day of Service is an event supported by the Corporation for National Service and the Center for Nonviolent Social Change, Inc. in Atlanta. Each year non profit agencies, schools and volunteer programs from across the country plan and implement service opportunities in conjunction with the legal holiday honoring the birthday of Martin Luther King, Jr.
