Service Days
King Day of Service and Leadership 2012, Monday, January 16th is an annual day of service hosted in patnership by the Northeastern University Center of Community Service and the Massachusetts Promise Fellowship. The event mobilizes youth, students, AmeriCorps volunteers, and community members who complete a variety of service projects and leadership development workshops to celebrate the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Details for this year's event are as follows:
When: Monday, January 16th 9:00am to 3:30pm.
Where: The Curry Student Center on Northeastern University's campus. All service projects and workshops will take place on Northeastern's campus.
How to Attend: Registration for the event is now full. Unfortunately this event is now full. Program: Participants must be able to attend the event in its entirety.
9:00-9:30am - Registration and Breakfast
9:30-10:00am - Kick-off with Keynote Speaker and Opening Activity
10:00-12:00pm - Service Project and Workshop Sessions
12:00-1:00pm - Lunch Provided
1:00-3:00pm - Service Project and Workshop Sessions
3:00-3:30pm - Closing Reflection Activity
Service Projects: Volunteers will have the opportunity to complete service projects to benefit partner nonprofit organizations. Participants have the chance to list their service project preferences when they register. Service projects include:
Mural Painting with the NEU Mural Club: Volunteers will work with the Northeastern University Mural Club to paint canvas murals that will hang in the Patrick Kennedy Elementary School.
Decorating Book Folders for Generations, Inc.: Volunteers will decorate the book folders that serve as "road maps" with learning materials for literacy volunteers during reading sessions with children.
Book Recording with Jumpstart: Record books on tape to be utilized by Jumpstart's early childhood education programs.
Planting with Northeastern University's Sustainable Service Committee: Plant your own food and learn about sustainable food practices with representatives from Northeastern University's Sustainable Service Committee.
Leadership Developement Workshops: Volunteers will also participate in workshops designed to connect service with Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy. Workshops will be led by representatives from a variety of different community nonprofit organizations including Girls' LEAP, Youth on Board, MathPower, 826 Boston, The Food Project and the Massachusetts Promise Fellowship Nonprofit Leadership Institute. Participants will have the chance to list their workshop theme preferences when they register.
