Faculty Participation

UNIVERSITY COMMENCEMENT
May 4, 2012

Commencement represents the culmination of a collective journey of our students, faculty, staff and administrators and is a time when the University community joins with families to celebrate the accomplishments of its graduating seniors.  As a member of the faculty, you played an integral role in their journey.  We invite you to celebrate your students’ final steps at Northeastern by participating in the University Commencement on Friday, May 4, 2012.

REMEMBER THE JOURNEY

Faculty may serve in the following roles (a single role per ceremony):

  • Marshal:  we ask each college to fulfill a specific requirement of faculty participation to assist in the line-up area, diploma distribution process and the graduate recession based on the expected attendance for each ceremony.
-Meeting:  Faculty marshals are asked to attend one of the marshal orientation meetings, scheduled for 12 noon or 5:00 PM, Tuesday, April 17 in room 300 Richards to review their role and responsibilities.  This meeting is most important and helpful to those serving in the role for the first time.
  • Procession: faculty who do not wish to serve in the role of Marshal, but are interested in participating in the ceremony, may do so as a member of the Faculty Procession.  Participation in the procession does not fulfill the marshal rotation requirement.
  • Hooder:  faculty serving as an advisor to PhD candidates (September 2011, January and May 2012 only) will be invited by the Commencement Office to “hood” their candidate(s) at a separate hooding ceremony.  This role does not fulfill the marshal rotation requirement.
Please contact your college if you are interested in serving as a Marshal or in participating in the Faculty Procession.  PhD Advisers may contact the Commencement Office with inquiries at 617.373.4098 or by emailing Christina Sullivan at ch.sullivan@neu.edu.
