Universal Instructional Design

Universal Instructional Design (UID) - also known as Universal Course Design (UCD) - is an innovative integrative approach that fosters excellence in teaching by making curricula accessible and applicable to diverse learners. Northeastern University's UID team has been trained in the pedagogy and practices of UID through the "Pedagogy and Student Services for Institutional Transformation" (PASS IT) Institute at the University of Minnesota (funded by the U.S. Department of Education). This project serves to introduce the pedagogy of UID and provide an opportunity to enhance and maximize teaching and learning across the Northeastern University campus.

As an introduction to the concept of UID you can download slides from a presentation.

Those interested can find more information on UID, including a free book and an extensive bibliography, from the PASS IT webiste at the University of Minnesota.

Developing Teaching Strategies to Successfully Reach More Students More of the Time

The UID team, CIETL, and the Provost's Office sponsored an important workshop, with this title, on Jan 13, 2009. Click this link to read the announcement from the archive. Our speaker at the workshop, Kirsten Behling, who oversees the implementation of Universal Course Design on 15 New England college campuses has created a useful website that provides help to modify your course.
