American Sign Language - English Interpreting

Like any other language, American Sign Language (ASL) has its own grammar, structure, and rhythm. By learning these, your courses will expose you to the theory and practice of intercultural communication between Deaf and hearing people. This knowledge will enable you to become an ASL-English interpreter in settings as varied as the classroom, theater, and business meetings.

The curriculum uses a bilingual, bicultural approach to learning about the Deaf community and the skill of interpreting. The program emphasizes learning ASL and understanding the Deaf community, becoming skilled at the interpreting process, and acquiring a broad liberal arts education, which is helpful as students pursue a wide range of interpreting opportunities.

The program begins with ASL courses and progresses to classes that focus on Deaf culture and history. Two years of interpreting end with a practicum with interpreters around the Boston area, using the skills students have developed in real-life interpreting situations.
