Pre-Med

A number of our chemistry majors go on to medical, veterinary, dental and other professional schools following graduation. Given the fundamental importance of chemistry in these disciplines, we pride ourselves in providing the ideal preparation and mentoring required to ensure the success of our graduates. Medical schools typically require a minimum of four chemistry, two biology and two physics courses in addition to math and English courses. Since the highest concentration of courses is in chemistry, we have established dedicated sections of general and organic chemistry for chemistry majors to offer additional emphasis, which will help with preparation for professional entrance examinations (MCAT, GRE).

We also assign our pre-professional students to upperclassmen mentors who will help guide you through the preparation and application process. Coupled with this support, the university has a dedicated pre-medical advisory group (www.premed.neu.edu), and a chemistry faculty advisor assigned to our majors (Zhaohui (Sunny) Zhou, z.zhou@neu.edu or 617-373-4818).

Many of our current pre-med chemistry majors are electing to pursue the combined BS-MS degree where they can obtain specific research experience in a relevant professional field. For example, several of our majors in the pre-med program are conducting research at the nearby Harvard University Medical School, involved in projects with a clinical mentor at Harvard, coupled with a faculty advisor in chemistry. For those enrolled in the standard 5-year BS degree with co-op, we have established co-op opportunities at nearby medical schools, and for those who elect to complete a 4-year BS degree without co-op, we will arrange a relevant undergraduate research experience in connection with a local research hospital, a faculty research laboratory, a bio-tech or pharmaceutical company.
