Congratulations, Class of 2016!

Joy and jubilation were in the air as Northeastern’s Class of 2016 took the stage at the Charlotte campus for its 3rd Annual Graduation Celebration on Saturday, June 11. The campus holds an event each year in honor of graduates local to the region, which gives them an alternative option to the traditional Commencement Ceremony in Boston every May.

At the Charlotte celebration, the graduates participated in the campus’ Paws on Paws tradition, a custom that allows students to place their handprint on the university’s mascot, Paws. Graduates further enjoyed fellowship with family, friends, faculty, and staff during a reception following the program. Dr. Cheryl Richards, the campus’ CEO and Dean, led the graduation procession, welcoming and recognizing the new graduates as part of the Northeastern family.

Student Speaker Anthony Tang, a graduate of the Master of Education program, gave reflections on the student experience, reminding his fellow graduates to “never forget where we started and those that helped us get where we are” and to have “a heart of gratefulness.” Tang’s remarks focused on change, advising the graduates that “it is our time to lead the change.” And foreshadowing the tolerance necessary to have peace in the world, he closed, “may we always be willing to understand one another’s differences, understand the changes that are occurring, and improve them to the best of our ability.”

The Class of 2016 represented six of the nine colleges at the university, a first for the Charlotte campus. Honorary guest Dr. Philomena Mantella, Senior Vice President and CEO of the Northeastern University Global Network, spoke to graduates acknowledging that the campus opened just five years ago offering degrees from only one college, the College of Professional Studies. Since then, we have broadened our programs to cover nearly each college at our main campus in Boston. Our growth can be equated to the strength of the university’s network, as demonstrated in Dr. Mantella’s remarks. She advised the graduates that “the world ahead is about networks,” and with Northeastern, they are now “part of a very broad and diverse network” one that will “bring us into new places and spaces together.”

Rick Davis, Vice President of Alumni Relations

Rick Davis, Vice President of Alumni Relations, echoed Dr. Mantella’s sentiments, expressing to the graduates, “You are part of what I call the largest family in the universe.” Indeed, the university’s alumni is represented in 186 countries around the world. With a family that large, Davis encouraged our newest alumni to take advantage of all the resources and services available at Northeastern, tell their story, and strengthen their new global family.
