The Criminal History Systems Board maintains the criminal justice information system which connects all the criminal justice agencies in Massachusetts. One segment of the CHSB is the CORI unit – the Criminal Offender Record Information Unit, which does criminal record checks for non-criminal justice agencies such as schools, camps and daycare centers. The work is extremely important since they are processing background checks for agencies that work with many vulnerable populations such as children and the elderly. About a third of the people in the CORI unit have been associated with the co-op program – many are former co-op students who now work full-time, plus about six co-op students from Northeastern’s College of Criminal Justice are employed there each semester. Co-ops also work in the Firearm support services area, which maintains all firearm license information and firearms transaction information, including sales and transfers.
