Bystander Education is a program developed by members of the University of New Hampshire to encourage community intervention against rape and sexual assault. This model attempts to provide students with the tools to recognize the behaviors that can lead to rape or sexual assault and how to safely intervene in such circumstances. Bystander education does not label men as aggressors and women as victims: it gives men and women a positive role in their community by asking everyone to look out for each other. Though most research on rape and sexual assault focuses on the scenario of a male perpetrator and female victim because it is the most common situation, Bystander Education is geared toward helping all members of every community. We recognize that rape and sexual assault can also occur from a female-to-male, a male-to-male, or a female-to-female and hope to provide support to any person who may experience rape or sexual assault in any form.
