Inspired by the legacy of the Northeastern Ski Team of the 1970s, this year’s Northeastern University Men’s and Women’s Club Alpine Ski Team is dedicated to returning the team to it’s ranking as one of the best ski teams in the country. However, due to the high costs associated with our sport it has been challenging to obtain the required resources for adequate on-snow training, which is necessary to compete at the level we desire.
Our team competes against other club teams in New England as part of the Thompson Division of the United States Collegiate Ski Association. Upon finishing the season in the Thompson Division, we have the opportunity to advance to the Eastern Collegiate Ski Association Regional Championships and United States Collegiate Association National Championships, both of which put us in competition against well-funded Division 3 varsity programs.
It is our goal to rival these varsity teams and return to national prominence by qualifying for the United States Collegiate Ski Association National Championships. To allow us to compete to the best of our ability and apply resources to on-snow training, we are asking for your help to raise the necessary funds to cover the National and Regional League dues.
Our team members are currently responsible to pay for all club expenses out of pocket, including race fees, travel accommodations, team equipment, on-snow training, and personal race gear. With your support we will be able to alleviate some of the financial burden of the administrative fees that are placed on each individual athlete and allocate more of our budget towards adequate training at nearby mountains throughout our race season.
We appreciate any help that you are able to offer to reduce our costs and make competitive skiing more assessable for Northeastern students!
Our goal is to raise $1,600 to cover our dues to compete in the United States Collegiate Ski Association at both the regional and national level. The total cost for the National dues is $415 and the cost for the Regional division dues is $1,185.
With our league dues funded, we hope to continue our efforts to raise an additional $3400. These funds will be used in two separate areas. The first will be to cover the fees associated with on-snow training throughout the winter, which are approximately $500 per session. The remaining amount will be used to purchase new equipment that will allow for these on-snow training sessions to be successful. This equipment may include but is not limited to new race gates, drills, and drill bits.
The Northeastern University Alpine Ski Team is a student-funded club sport that represents Northeastern University in collegiate ski racing. As a member of the Thompson Division of the United States Collegiate Ski Association, the team competes in twelve Slalom and Giant Slalom races spread over six weekends throughout Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont.
The team holds dry-land training throughout the fall to prepare for the race season which begins the first week of January. Throughout the race season the team trains once per week at local ski areas. The Northeastern Alpine Ski club provides many students with their first experience competing as a team, in a sport that is typically individually scored.
Upon finishing the season in the Thompson Division, we have the opportunity each year to advance to the Eastern Collegiate Ski Association Regional Championships and United States Collegiate Association National Championships. Throughout the 1970’s the Northeastern Ski Team was one of the best in the country. We aim to return the team to this level.
