Commencement
You must initiate the commencement process by applying to graduate via your myNEU account. This will place your name on the commencement list and start the commencement process. You should register even if there is a chance that all of your requirements will not be completed in time to graduate on a specific commencement date.
Review your academic record for accuracy. Unofficial transcripts are available via your myNEU account. Continuous registration is required of all degree candidates who are submitting a thesis or dissertation.
Talk with your advisor to ensure that you have met all departmental requirements, such as the required number of credit hours, cumulative average (minimum 3.000), continuous registration, language exam, comprehensive exam, thesis, dissertation, etc.
The following are requirements for submitting petitions. Submit necessary paperwork to your instructor or department well in advance of the Graduate School deadline, to ensure adequate time for review and approval.
Missing or incomplete grade changes that are over one year old must be accompanied by appropriate documentation explaining the delay.
Requests for transfer credit must be submitted to your department.
- Ensure that all of your financial obligations have been met. Go to Student Financial Services, 354 Hayden Hall, to verify your status. In order for your diploma to be released, financial obligations must be met before commencement.
- Ph.D. candidates must complete the National Opinion Research Council's (NORC) Survey of Earned Doctorates (SED). The survey takes approximately 10 minutes to complete, is done on-line, and is a required component of the commencement clearance process. If you are uncomfortable with answering some of the questions, you may leave them blank. The NORC Survey should be submitted before the student brings the NU Graduate School Approval Record to the Graduate School. The Graduate School will receive confirmation of your survey completion via NORC.
- Students submitting theses or dissertations are advised to schedule a format review appointment with the Graduate School (Email: gradcssh@neu.edu, Phone: 617-373-5990) before the defense occurs. The appointment takes approximately 10 minutes. Please be prepared to bring printed copies of the following: Graduate School Approval Record, all introductory pages (title page through the table of contents), and a few pages of text. You do not need to print your entire document for this appointment.
