Academic Support & Assistance
The College of Arts and Sciences has a multi-tiered academic advising system with some advisors located in a central location called the Center for Academic Services located in One Meserve Hall and others located in the College's departments and programs. All College of Arts and Sciences students have:
- a professional academic advisor located in the Center for Academic Services
- a faculty advisor located in the student's major department or program
- In addition, students who participate in the co-op program have a co-op advisor
- Freshmen students also have access to a new peer advising program, called PALs
Students interested in going on an international study program have access to an advisor in the Office of International Programs located at 10 Belvedere.

Center for Academic Services
The College of Arts and Sciences Center for Academic Services in One Meserve Hall provides a central place within the college for undergraduate students to go for a wide range of academic support services. The center is the place where you can go first with your academic questions. We are committed to helping you get the assistance that you need, whether it be in our office or by referring you to one of our academic departments or the correct University office. Our goal is to help you navigate the University and to clear the pathway to your academic success. Areas and services housed in the Center for Academic Services are listed below.
Advising
Academic advising is an ongoing process that engages students in educational planning consistent with their academic strengths and personal and career goals. In the College of Arts and Sciences, this student-centered advising process involves an active partnership among students, dean’s office advisors, and faculty advisors. Dean’s office advisors, located in the center, provide general guidance on academic matters and assist students in their progress from orientation through graduation. Faculty advisors in the college’s academic departments advise and mentor students and function as the student’s main connection with the major. Tutoring
The College of Arts and Sciences tutoring program strives to meet the academic needs of undergraduate students by providing a wide range of tutoring services for many courses offered in the college. The goal of the tutoring program is to promote independent and active learning among students and to have a direct and positive effect on improving their academic achievement. Program for Undeclared Students
The goal of the Undeclared Program is to provide you with the support and resources you need to help with the decision-making process of choosing a major by the end of the freshman year or beginning of the sophomore year. The program consists of three components: strong one-on-one academic advising; a first-year seminar course, Connections and Decisions; learning communities; and co-curricular programming devoted to informing you about majors and career paths.
Academic Advancement Program
General Studies Program
The General Studies Program is a one-year, full-time academic program for selected first-year students who are likely to excel in small, structured, and rigorous learning environments. General Studies is committed to creating a sense of community and support for its students through learning communities; academic courses taught by selected faculty; a first-year seminar, Strategic Thinking and Learning taught by a student’s advisor; one-on-one advising; and peer tutoring. General Studies faculty work closely together as a team to monitor their students’ progress and to support students in their success into the sophomore year. Experiential Learning
Integrating classroom study and experiential learning is a cornerstone of the Northeastern undergraduate experience. The Center for Academic Services is the place to come to learn more about the many ways you can fulfill your Experiential Learning requirement. Experiential Learning includes cooperative education, undergraduate research, service-learning, selected global experiences, and more. Advisors in the center can help get you started on the experiential learning path. Students may also apply to the center for support of their experiential learning projects. Two types of grants are offered: Faculty/Undergraduate Research Initiative Grants and College of Arts and Sciences Experiential Learning Grants.
Cooperative Education
A significant component of experiential learning is the University’s Cooperative Education Program. The center houses the central College of Arts and Sciences Co-op Office and works with all of the college’s co-op coordinators to provide the best co-op experiences for our students.
