African American Studies

African-American studies exposes students to the experiences of African-American people and others of African descent. The curriculum reflects an interdisciplinary approach, based on the fields outlined by The National Council of Black Studies: historical, social-behavioral, and cultural studies. International studies, public policy, and the impact of science and technology are integral parts of the program.
Students apply theoretical knowledge to real world problems and the challenges posed by the diversity of racial, cultural, and ethnic groups, in the United States and abroad. African-American studies graduates often attend professional schools and teach at the secondary or college level. Others work in museums, libraries, research centers, social service agencies, business, public service, and social welfare and law enforcement agencies.
