Commencement To-Do List

1. You must initiate the commencement process by registering for graduation via your my NEU account. This will place your name on the commencement list and start the commencement process. You should register even if there is a chance that all your requirements will not be completed in time to graduate on a specific commencement date.

2. Review your academic record for accuracy. Unofficial transcripts are available via your MyNeu account.

Continuous registration is required of all degree candidates who are presenting a thesis or dissertation.

3. Talk with your advisor to ensure that you have met all departmental requirements, such as the required number of credit hours, cumulative average (minimum 3.000), continuous registration, language exam, comprehensive exam, thesis, dissertation, etc.

Following are requirements for submitting petitions. Submit necessary paperwork to your instructor or department well in advance of the Graduate School deadline.

Missing or incomplete grade changes that are over one year old must be accompanied by appropriate documentation explaining the delay.

Requests for transfer credit or special student credit must be submitted to your department.

Any student who has exceeded the time limit for completing a degree must petition for a time-limit extension.

4. Ensure that all of your financial obligations have been met. Go to the Student Central, 120 Hayden Hall, to verify your status. In order for your diploma to be released, financial obligations must be met before commencement.

5. Ph.D. candidates must complete the Survey of Earned Doctorate (SED). Please bring the completed SED (click here to download the questionnaire) to the Graduate School Office. Read the SED confidentiality and purpose and use brochures.

6. Students submitting theses or dissertations are advised to schedule a format review appointment with the Graduate School (gsas@neu.edu, 617-373-3982) before the defense occurs. The appointment takes approximately 10 minutes. Please be prepared to bring printed copies of the following: Graduate School Approval Record, all introductory pages (title page through the table of contents), and a few pages of text. You do not need to print your entire document for this appointment.
