Janie Howland

Guest Artist, Scenic Design

An award-winning scenic designer, Janie returned to Northeastern for Antigone. Previously, she designed Romeo and Juliet, Phantom Lady and The Seagull, and taught Set Design in 2013 for the Theatre department. During her distinguished career, Janie has designed more than 200 productions at the Lyric Stage Company of Boston, Speakeasy Stage Company, New Rep Theatre, Emerson Majestic, Wheelock Family Theatre, Boston Children’s Theatre, Stoneham Theatre, New Jersey Shakespeare Festival, American Stage Festival, New England Conservatory, Boston Conservatory of Music, Barter Theatre (VA), Opera Boston, Boston Midsummer Opera, Huntington Theatre, ART Institute, Nora Theatre, Central Square Theatre, Reagle Players, Weston Playhouse (VT), and North Shore Music Theatre.

Recent productions include: Sweeney Todd (Lyric Stage Company), Carousel (Emerson College), Whipping Man (New Rep), Romeo & Juliet, Henry VIII (Actor’s Shakespeare Project) and Hairspray (Wheelock Family Theatre).

Janie teaches at Emerson College and Wellesley College. She has an M.F.A. in scenic design from Brandeis University. She is a 2009, 2006, and 1997 Elliot Norton Award-winner; and a 2014, 2007 and 2006 IRNE Award-winner. Last summer she was part of a muli-disciplinary art exhibition, Consenses. Janie’s design continues to tour nationally with the exhibition.
