Visiting Lecturer, Music Industry
Prior to joining Northeastern University in the fall of 2012, Robert Lyons was a digital media executive at WGBH in Boston, a major producer of TV, Radio and Interactive content for PBS and NPR. Among his achievements at WGBH was the building and managing of nine worldwide music streaming channels while overseeing web and mobile app development. His interest in the convergence of digital media leads him to prototype new services, and these have included a multichannel music service using HD Television spectrum, monetizing audio streams and creating a video version of a daily radio show for broadcast on a national DTV documentary channel. As an Executive Producer he has created radio companions for many PBS television series, including Martin Scorcese’s The Blues and Rock&Roll, an Unruly History. His background also includes producing live national radio broadcasts from the world’s largest outdoor jazz festival in New Orleans, pop music festivals in Telluride, Colorado and live international broadcasts of the Vienna Philharmonic. He has produced for Warner/Reprise, NPR and many others. His research focuses on the business, technical and creative aspects of the digital disruption of music.
