Professor Leonard attended the University of Massachusetts at Amherst where he studied Music Education (BM ’02) with a concentration in Trumpet, having studied with Professors Walter Chesnut and Eric Berlin, as well as working in depth with Professors of Jazz Jeff Holmes and David Sporny and returned to UMass Amherst to pursue a Masters in Music in Jazz Composition and Arranging (MM ’13). After completing his undergrad degree he spent several years working as a freelance musician, composer, arranger, and music copyist. In 2002 he transcribed and notated the Guitar 1 & 2, Bass, and Drum Set books for the musical “Movin’ Out” on Broadway featuring the music of Billy Joel and the choreography of Twyla Tharp. John has also worked extensively as music copyist for Grammy Award Winner Jeffrey Holmes, Chair of the Jazz and African-American Music Studies program at UMass Amherst. For the past several years John worked alongside DCI Hall of Fame recipients George N. Parks and Thomas P. Hannum, writing music for and instructing the Power and Class of New England, the UMass Marching Band, and served as the Director of the UMass Hoop Band from 2008 until 2012. At Northeastern (appointed Jan 2012) Mr. Leonard is Director of the Pep Band, Director of the Concert Band, and manages several administrative tasks within the department including the scholarship program.
