Andrew Mall, PhD
Assistant Professor, Interim Coordinator of Music Industry
Andrew Mall is an active scholar of the music industry, arts administrator, musician, and teacher. His research and teaching focus on nostalgia, collecting, and consumption; categories of mainstream and underground music; histories of the recording industries; and the organizational practices and hierarchies of small and large institutions involved in the music industry. An expert on the U.S. Christian recording industry and market, his writings appear in the Canterbury Dictionary of Hymnology, the Continuum Encyclopedia of Popular Musics of the World, the edited volume The Spirit of Praise: Music and Worship in Pentecostal-Charismatic Christianity, and others.
As an arts administrator, he has volunteered and worked in community radio consistently since 1997 at WLVR (Bethlehem, PA), WHPK (Chicago, IL), and WLUW (Chicago). His positions in radio have included publications director, assistant music director, disc jockey, DJ trainer, and director of promotions. Most recently, he served for six years as a founding board member of the Chicago Independent Radio Project, where he co-wrote and enforced policies governing DJs and volunteers as part of the human resources and programming committees. He has also worked at Cornerstone Festival, Touch & Go Records, and Rush Hour Concerts, among other institutions.
Although originally trained as a jazz saxophonist, he has been an active performer of Javanese gamelan since 2006. In Chicago he performed with the ensemble Friends of the Gamelan, where he also served as secretary of the board of directors and as the education coordinator. He co-launched a Javanese gamelan program at Chicago’s Old Town School of Folk Music. In Boston, he performs with Boston Village Gamelan.
Prior to coming to Northeastern, he taught at DePaul University and the University of Chicago. He completed a PhD in ethnomusicology and an MA in social sciences at the University of Chicago, and a BS/MS in computer science and a BA in music at Lehigh University.
Prof. Mall is the Interim Coordinator of the Music Industry program while Professor Leon Janikian is on sabbatical during the fall 2015 semester.
