Demonstration: Alexander Technique
Lauren Hallal is an AmSAT certified teacher of the Alexander Technique. Lauren holds a BFA in Acting from Syracuse University and has been a member of Beau Jest Moving Theater since 1991. Lauren came to the Alexander Technique after struggling with her voice and body-use for years. She loves to work with actors and singers and with chronic pain patients as well. Lauren enjoys an active lifestyle with many hobbies including, running, hiking and downhill skiing, and singing in a rock-n-roll band with her husband.
The Alexander Technique began as a vocal technique when FM Alexander found that the only step left to help his voice was surgery and instead of surgery, he set out to find out what he was “doing” that led to the vocal distress. The Alexander Technique teaches a better understanding of the internal relationship between the head, neck and back and brings that understanding to a conscious level. In Alexander lessons, performers learn to identify unconscious habits of tension, learn to “undo” them and gain pathway so that they can establish a new way of using their body without unwanted habits.
Performers who study the Alexander Technique will identify habits that get in the way of their voice, posture and general body use. The Alexander Technique is a practical method that can help with:

In this Introductory Workshop, you will learn: Who FM Alexander was and what he discovered. What the principles of the technique are and how they are applied. How a lesson taught. Why the Alexander Technique is relevant to you as a performer. What is your “Primary Control” and why does the best use of this affect your voice and everything about you as a performer. Lauren will do a demonstration of a lesson and lead you through some exploration exercises so that you can begin to identify habits and learn more about the full length and width of your body. Depending on the size of the group, Lauren will give each student a mini-lesson or a brief hands-on experience.
